Mayor's Welcome
Cr Robert (Bob) Oakes - Mayor of Nebo Shire
On behalf of the residents, Councillors and Staff of Nebo Shire I extend warmest greetings to you along with an invitation to visit our beautiful Shire when next you travel in the Mackay Region.
Nebo Shire is located one hours drive south-west of Mackay in Queensland and just 13 hours travel by car, bus or train, or 2 hours by plane from Brisbane.
The Shire has a population of about 3,000 people servicing an area of 10,000 square kilometres, who are mainly involved in Coal Mining or Agriculture, Hospitality or Service Industries. The Shire has three main towns, Nebo – the administrative Centre, Glenden – an Xstrata Mining Township, and Coppabella, a Queensland Rail Township.
Nebo is best known for its award-winning heritage background and its links to early Goldmining activities at Mt Britton. Many Nebo Graziers have won major show events based on the quality of cattle from this region. In addition, Nebo has a very good Rodeo and perhaps the largest Campdraft event facilitated in Queensland. Apart from that there are many other attractions for you to enjoy during a short visit.
Nebo Shire is an ideal destination for day trips, with many local attractions including the Nebo Museum, Nebo Hotel and the Pioneer Tracks Photographic Gallery Museum; and Lake Elphinstone (watersports and camping ground) when the Lake has water! A number of camping grounds and Parks are available within the Shire at very reasonable rates.
I encourage you to visit Nebo Shire for a good time and a great Heritage experience.
Cr Robert (Bob) Oakes
