HISTORY
Coppabella meaning crossing place originated on 23 March, 1970 when the owners of “Annandale”, Messrs. W.H., E. and W.R Neilson received a Notice of Resumption of Land from the Railway Department. This Land was resumed for the purposes of building residences for railway employees.
The unique town had no police station, hotel, post office, banks, school or churches. Until Moranbah was established residents had to travel to Mackay over unsealed roads to shop.
After experiencing a number of accidents in the town, a group of residents formed a volunteer first aid group. A meeting held on 19 June, 1984, Superintendent Mr. Les Beutel, Mackay QATB requested for donations from the community to assist with the costs of maintaining the vehicle and equipment. A committee was formed and through raffles, rodeos, hoy mornings, and annual monster cent sale and generous donations received from mining unions in the area, the committee made substantial donations to the Mackay Centre each year.
